Career Sponsor

A career sponsor is a senior person inside your organization who actively spends their influence on your advancement — putting your name forward for roles, defending you in promotion rounds, opening doors you cannot see. Unlike a mentor, who advises you, a sponsor advocates for you when you are not in the room.

Sponsorship cannot be booked or requested cold; it is earned through visible, reliable work that makes the sponsor's bet on you safe. What you can do deliberately: make your results legible to seniors, state your ambitions clearly, and deliver when a small door is opened.

Most careers need both figures at different moments: mentors for direction and honest counsel, sponsors for acceleration inside a specific organization. Confusing the two — expecting advocacy from a mentor or advice from a sponsor — disappoints everyone involved.
