Career Plateau

A career plateau is an extended stretch where your role, responsibility and learning stop growing although your ambition has not — promotions stall, tasks repeat, and effort no longer changes outcomes. Plateaus are normal in every long career; the question is whether yours is structural (the role has no headroom) or self-made (you stopped asking for more).

Diagnosis matters more than escape. A structural plateau — flat hierarchy, no budget, shrinking business — will not yield to harder work, and the honest options are an internal move or an external one. A self-made plateau often dissolves when you make your ambitions explicit and ask for scope.

Six months of no growth is a signal, not an emergency; two years is a pattern. Score it instead of brooding over it, and decide from the numbers.
